Description

In studies of general operators of the same nature, general convolution transforms are immediately encountered as the objects of inversion. The relation between differential operators and integral transforms is the basic theme of this work, which is geared toward upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. It may be read easily by anyone with a working knowledge of real and complex variable theory. Topics include the finite and non-finite kernels, variation diminishing transforms, asymptotic behavior of kernels, real inversion theory, representation theory, the Weierstrass transform, and complex inversion theory.

Hirschman's Convolution Tranform work is here presented in 264 dense pages. Dover is to be complimented for making it available in quite readable form. That said the motivation for the effort is odd. On page 4 we learn that the authors are interested in convolution transforms over the entire real line. These transforms can have odd properties, which in certain applications are inconsistent with causality, and are therefore unusable.A similar problem afflicts the Laplace transform theory as often presented. There the theory is constructed for functions defined on the entire positive real line. Many perfectly respectable endeavors concern functions defined only on finite intervals, a topic neglected for no good reason .
