Lost Newport is unique in that it features 50 houses that no longer exist. The book is divided into four sections featuring cottages located in the North, Central, Bellevue Avenue and Oceanfront sections of Newport. Each structure has it's own 2-3 page chapter with accompanying text about the house, the owners, the architect, modifications to the structure, and its location. Also included are 4 maps associated with the above sections. Thus, one can determine where the house once stood. The photos are B&W, sepia, and a few colorized original B&Ws.The text is brief, but interesting. Architectural styles include colonial, Victorian, Georgian, stick & shingle, Beaux Arts....you name it. The overall effect has an almost melancholy quality to it. The people are dead. The houses are gone. But this delightful little book, a good cup of coffee, and your imagination.....can bring them all back.
