Description

Drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence summarizes America's founding political philosophy. At once a cherished symbol of liberty and an expression of Jefferson's monumental talents as a writer, the document captures in unforgettable phrases the ideals of individual liberty that formed the backbone of American's Revolutionary movement. In setting forth these "self-evident truths" alongside a list of grievances against King George's Britain, the Declaration of Independence justified the breaking of ties with "Mother England" and the formation of a new country. This gift edition, printed in two colors on acid-free paper, contains illustrations and biographies of the signers alongside the document itself.

A great little book. It gets 5 stars because it is exactly what the title says: The Declaration of Independence with short biographies of its signers. Can't go wrong there. It's like a small little reference book which can be nice to have either for yourself or during a discussion. It has a picture of the Declaration itself on the beginning and ending page. That is not meant to read. Just shows the layout. Then the declaration itself and short biographies. When reading it you get a little "aha" feeling of "hey, this little phrase became a part of the Bill of Rights".The biographies are short and once in a while with a sentence that is very difficult to interpret. But the book clearly states that the biographies comes from a book by B. J. Lossing from 1848, most likely with the original spelling and punctuation. The font size of the short biographies are maybe a 6-8, so maybe not an easy read for everyone. The book could of course be your first introduction to the subject matter, because it does give you an incentive to maybe deepen your knowledge. But I think (my opinion) one would have more value of the book if you already knew some of the terminology used in the biographies. To give just one example, Congress, Continental Congress, Federal Congress, General Congress, Stamp Act Congress and Provincial Congress. But for what its worth, its a great little book. Either by itself or in a collection.
