The world of 19th century Fort Snelling comes alive in this beautifully written novel. The author's sense of place is nothing short of amazing. Residents of the Twin Cities area will recognize the places she is describing even before she links them to their modern names.The author treats the multicultural world of the fort with a sensitivity that was unusual for her time, although some of the language she uses is less than sensitive. The introduction to the book does a good job of explaining these issues.I first read this book as a 12 year old visitor to Fort Snelling. I was hooked at once, and have read it again and again over the years, whenever I feel homesick for Minnesota.
