Description

The elderly couple in this fine novel, a retired schoolteacher and the doctor with whom she has had a lifelong, tender love affair, find that, almost by accident, they have forfeited control of their own lives. Trapped in a nursing home, they are the victims of the biblical “apostles of light,” the deceitful do-gooders who profess righteousness. In subtle, elegant prose Ellen Douglas recounts a gripping story of their brave attempt to free themselves from a dreadful plight. They must confront both their corrupt and evil custodians and their well-meaning younger relatives who are tempted by greed, ambition, cowardice, and indifference. Apostles of Light was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1973.

Ellen Douglas addressed the grim problem of residential care in this book, "Apostles of Light" published in 1973.The author's vision of of possible elder abuse and profits generated by substandard living conditions preceded the current explosion of assisted living residences for the elderly. Douglas presents the possibility of indifference to the needs of the residents and even brutal torturous and dangerous implementation of techniques employed to render the tenants incapable of protesting faulty care. While most states have systems of inspection in place, this book, set in rural Mississippi, alerts us to the possible signs of below par care that might escape the untrained eye. The characters in this book are presented with personality profiles which assist the reader in better understanding the psychological backgrounds that perpetrated their subsequent behaviors.
